Mr A. G. Saunders
The death of Ainslie George Saunders at Pleasant Point this week removed a colourful character from the South Canterbury scene.

Mr Saunders, a stalwart of the Labour Party, was 73.

Commonly known as Barney, he was the son of a Pleasant Point farmer.  He attended the Pleasant Point primary school and Timaru Boys High School, of which he was dux in his final year.

A prominent sportsman in his youth, he was a member of the first Temuka rugby team to win the Beri Cup and was one of the promoters of the first Pleasant Point senior team in 1933.

After starting his working life as a shearer during 1936-37 Mr Saunders owned three threshing mills which he worked throughout South Canterbury.

The business was ended by the advent of the header harvester.  In later years he was a potato grower.

Mr Saunders was a foundation member of the Temuka branch of the Labour Party and was awarded the party's gold badge for long service some years ago.

He also served for a period as secretary of the Shearers Union and was an affiliate of the New Zealand Workers Union for more than 50 years.

Between 1968 and 1973 he was chairman of the Ashburton electorate Labour committee and he served in almost every position in the Pleasant Point branch of the party.

Mr Saunders, pre-deceased by his wife, is survived by a son and six daughters.
